#27ForThomas Fundraising Challenge for Bristol SANDS

BWOC team member Peter Byrom has taken on a brand-new challenge to help the charity close to his heart, Bristol Sands by completing 27 runs of 10k or more!

On January 2nd 2004 Peter and his wife sadly lost their first baby Thomas and discovered SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity) that offer support to anyone affected by the loss of a baby. They found the group to be life changing, meeting many amazing parents going through the same journey.

Peter wanted to show his support for this amazing charity by starting fundraising activities to assist many parents who may need their help too.

He started by founding the Sands United Bristol football team which is now a hub for many dads, brothers, uncles and others who have been through the same experience to get together and enjoy football whist remembering their rainbow babies.

As well as this he has also taken part in other fundraising efforts including the Bristol 10k, but this year he wanted to start a special challenge #27ForThomas. The name was chosen as it was 27 weeks into the pregnancy that they discovered Thomas had passed away. The challenge saw him complete 27 runs of 10k or more starting on 5th January (Thomas’s 16th birthday) and ending with run number 27 (Bristol Half Marathon) on Sunday 27th September.

He was inspired by bereaved parents he knew and their fundraising challenges, people could sponsor either the training runs or individual miles of the half marathon. There were two exceptions – training run number 1 and the last 1.1 miles of the half marathon. They were for Thomas, for him to run in his memory.

Even though Covid-19 postponed the Bristol half marathon, supported by his friends he completed a half marathon on Sunday 27th September running laps of the seafront in Weston super Mare in 3hrs 25mins.

Thanks to people’s generosity he managed to raise £335 for the support group from the half marathon and £288 for the football team from the training runs!

Bristol Sands offer ongoing support to those who have lost a baby and the work they do is essential. If you would like to learn more or get involved please visit: www.bristol.sands.org.uk
